How To Make A Gift Box Cake Centerpiece

Image by sweetangeldelights on FlickrThe centerpiece at your event is always an important part of the decor.  Whether you are decorating for a wedding, bridal shower, baby shower, or birthday party, a fun centerpiece can add a special touch.  And when that centerpiece serves a purpose other than sitting and looking pretty, it’s all the better. You can now have gourmet cakes delivered, but isn't it just fun to make one yourself?

Gift box cakes are very popular, so it’s only natural that gift box cake centerpieces receive some attention as well.  Here are some tips for making gift box cake centerpieces that are almost too good looking to eat!

A gift box cake is one that is wrapped up just like a present.  These gorgeous cakes are popular at weddings and showers and provide endless opportunity for fun decorations.

To make your own gift box cakes that will serve as centerpieces, you will need:

  • Cake mix or your favorite cake recipe.
  • 2 eight or nine inch round cake pans.
  • Butter cream icing.
  • Wax paper or parchment paper.
  • Fondant.
  • Ruler.
  • Scissors.
  • Rolling pin.

With these simple items, you can make a gorgeous centerpiece that everyone will love.  To start, all you need to do is bake a cake in your cake pans.  When it is finished, let it cool to room temperature.  Round cakes will often have a bit of roundness to the top, so take a knife and cut off the excess to make a flat surface on both of the cakes.

Put one cake on a cardboard tray and place the other to the side.  Slather the top with icing.  Turn your attention to the second cake.  Flip it over and spread a thin layer of icing on the bottom.  Put the second cake on top of the first to make a little cake gift tower.  You will want to measure the height of the cake; you’ll need that measurement later.

Your butter cream frosting can be white or any color you choose.  Frost the whole cake and smooth it as best you can.  After this, put the cake into the refrigerator for at least an hour.  This will harden the icing and make it easier to work with.

Image by Ken's Oven on FlickrNext, find those measurements and get out some wax or parchment paper, a ruler, and a pen.  The gift box cake will have a lid, so decide how big you would like it.  If your cake measures five inches, and you want a lid that is one inch, draw a line on the wax paper that is four inches tall.

If your cake is 8 inches around, draw a line that is a bit more than eight inches wide on the wax paper.  So you’ll have a rectangle measuring 4 x 8 ½ or so (or 9 1/2, depending on the size of your pan).  You want it to be big enough to wrap around the whole cake.  Cut this rectangle out.

Get the cake and wrap the paper around the sides.  Make sure to do this slowly so you get it even.  The top 1 inch will be left without wrapping.  Cover the cake snugly but don’t leave hand-prints!

Concentrating on the top of the cake, use a contrasting color of butter cream frosting (if you used white for the bottom, try brown or a favorite color for the top).  Smooth it over the top of the cake and down the sides.  You’ll want to just cover the wax paper.  When the frosting is smooth, gently take off the wax paper, which has just helped you make a perfect lid for your box cake.

Now comes the fun (or difficult!) part, the decorating.  To make a fondant bow for your gift box cake, roll out the fondant (which comes in a variety of colors).  It should be smooth and flat and be about 1/8 of an inch thick.  Cut 11 strips that measure 1 inch wide x 5 ½ inches long.

Find an empty paper towel roll and wrap each of the 11 strips around it.  Spritz some water on one end of the strip and then pinch the two ends together.  Let the strips dry for about a half hour.  While they are drying, cut 2 more strips, which will become the bow’s streamers.  Cut a little triangle out of one end on each streamer.  Pinch the other edge of the streamer to fit underneath the bow.  Let these dry for another day.  Take the other strips off of your paper towel roll and let them dry on a tray for a day as well.

When your fondant strips have dried, use 6 of the bow loops to form a circle on top of the cake.  The inner edges of each loop should touch those of the next loop.  After this is done, use 4 of the bow loops to make a second layer on top of the first.  You’re almost there!

Put a little icing into the center of your bow and put the last loop into the middle.  The icing helps glue it in place.  Finally, use some more of your trusty frosting glue to attach the edges of the streamers.  Tuck them underneath the bow, and you have completed your lovely gift box cake centerpiece.
