Earth Day - April 22nd
What it is and what you can do
Earth Day is a great time to spend some time bettering the planet we live on. You can take part in community activities, or do something as simple as planting a tree or cleaning up the parks and ditches in your area. Every little thing counts!
How did Earth Day Begin?
Responding to widespread environmental degradation, Gaylord Nelson, a United States Senator from Wisconsin, called for an environmental teach-in, or Earth Day, to be held on April 22, 1970. Over 20 million people participated that year, and Earth Day is now observed each year on April 22 by more than 500 million people and national governments in 175 countries.
Below I have included ways for you and your family to make the most of your Earth Day celebration! Make every day Earth Day!
Earth Day Crafts
Get everyone in the family involved in creating something to better our world. A great idea is a bird house or bird feeder. You can start from scratch with spare wood, or purchase a kit available at your local hardware store or from Amazon.com.

Earth Day Tip #1
Use Canvas Shopping Bags
Each year, an estimated 500 billion to 1 trillion plastic bags are consumed worldwide. Plastic bags don't biodegrade, they photodegrade - breaking down into smaller and smaller toxic bits contaminating soil and water. Canvas bags are cheap and roomy! Find out more at www.reuseit.com.
Plant a Tree!
How Trees Help Our Earth
You know planting a tree is helpful to the environment but there are many ways that trees help us and our earth. Here are just a few:

Earth Day Tip #2
Get an Oil Change
An oil change and an air filter change will help your car run cleaner and emit less pollution. Running your car with dirty oil and a dirty air filter is the equivalent of spending an extra $0.15 per mile.
Eco-friendly Party Favors
Have a wedding or other party coming up? Here are some great ideas for party favors that are earth friendly!
You don't have to give your guests a favor that will end up in the landfill sooner or later. New eco-friendly favors are all the rage right now. Here are some great garden wedding favors like place cards and favors that you actually can plant to produce gorgeous wildflowers! They are elegant, useful, and earth friendly!
Earth Day Tip #3
Buy Used instead of New
Use CRAIGSLIST and FREECYCLE when looking for household items. You can get some great deals, and even things for free. Half.com, Amazon and Ebay are also great ways to get used items. Use your local library. Many have current movies that you can check out for free.
Earth Day Tip #4
Replace your light bulbs
Replace the lightbulbs in your house with LEDs . They cost more than regular bulbs, but they use less electricity (saving you money on your utility bill) and they last around 25 years. We think you should avoid CFL light bulbs (the spiral ones) as they contain mercury, which can spill if you break one and is definitely not earth friendly.
Books to Teach Children About Earth Day
It's never too early to teach our children how to take care of the land we live on. Showing them now how to respect the environment will stick with them for the rest of their lives. A good start is books about Earth Day. The fun and engaging text and pictures of these kids and baby board books will capture their interest and imaginations.
