How to Make Gift Labels

And it saves you money!

It’s a win/win situation for everyone.  Here are some ideas for making your own gift labels.  The only thing required is a few art supplies and some creativity.

To make your gift labels, you will need:

  • Sticker paper.
  • Decorative paper (like scrapbook paper or nice stationary).
  • Scissors, decorative edges are great.
  • Markers.
  • Glue stick.

To make:

The first step is to decide how big you want your gift labels to be.  One size does not fit all.  Smaller labels are perfect for wrapped gifts, and larger labels are ideal for gifts like homemade jam or a gift-in-a-jar.  Since these are you own creations, decide on the size that’s right for you, and cut the sticker paper down to size.  Trace the shape of the cut sticker paper onto the back of your decorative paper.

Use your scissors (with or without decorative edges) to cut out the decorative paper.  Next, glue this to the front of the sticker paper.

Now you’ll need to personalize the label.  This could be as simple as writing the greeting (“Merry Christmas” or “Happy Birthday,”) with a "to:" and "from:" or you could label your gift-in-a-jar: Home Style Chili, Quick Bean Soup, or Triple Fudge Brownies.  You can be straightforward with the text or silly, it is entirely up to you – and up to what you think your recipient would like.

The only thing you need to do now is remove the backing and put the label on your gift.  In just a few minutes, you can have a personalized label.  This is great for individual gifts, wedding favor labels, and you can also make several for holidays like Christmas or Easter.

Another great idea is to find free printable gift labels online.  You can then print the templates onto sticker paper (if your printer agrees), special label paper (make sure the size is correct), or regular paper.  If you use regular paper, simply cut out the labels and glue the printed gift labels to sticker paper, just like you did for the labels above.

Again, you can find very direct labels, or you can find those that are a little more contemporary or fun.  One that you can find on, says, “I’m giving you this gift so you’ll give me one.”  Choose the labels that suit your personality as well as that of your recipient.  Another great site to design your own labels is DLTK.  You simply choose your theme, fonts, and other features, and the site generates labels for you.  From there, you can print them and repeat the steps with the sticker paper.

If you have children or are doing this as a craft with kids, you can simply have the sticker paper ready.  Cut different shapes (circles and rectangles are just fine), and then allow them to decorate the labels.  Older children can practice their handwriting by writing the recipient’s name and their own.  This gives the labels a very personal look that is appealing to your family and close friends.

Making your own gift labels is a fantastic way to save money and make your gift even more personal and beautiful.
