For many, the taste of a delicious cookie is one of them, and since chocolate chip cookies are a quintessential American favorite, they’re often going to top the list. But you need butter and eggs to make the perfect chocolate chip cookie, not to mention the chocolate chips themselves, right? Wrong. There are some great vegan chocolate chip recipes out there that will feed your cravings without interfering with your dietary choices. Not vegan yourself? That's okay. While almost every recipe you find online will vary when it comes to the perfect ingredients, you may want to keep a few things on hand for the next time you’re in the mood to bake chocolate chip cookies.
Vegan Chocolate Chips or Carob Chips: Ordinary chocolate chips often contain milk or at least milk fat, and that’s the last thing you want in your cookies. There are many higher quality brands out there, though, that keep the dairy out of the chocolate chips, and this is exactly what you want to look for. Chocolate isn’t inherently anti-vegan, you just have to look for the right brand. Many dark chocolate chips are dairy free, but to make certain, read the list of ingredients carefully. Carob chips are another option. While they do taste a bit different than chocolate chips, they’re a good substitute in cookies. Carob is actually a plant grown in the Mediterranean, and the beans inside are roasted, then ground up to make a powder. A few ingredients, like sweeteners, are added to make the chips themselves.
Vegan Margarine: While you may find a few recipes that use other fats or oils as a substitute, this is the most commonly used ingredient. Fats and oils are a must in cookies, so do your homework and find a brand that is suitable for baking and tasty too.
Egg Substitute: Eggs are an important part of cookies, and you’ll either have to use a commercially available egg substitute from your local market or a flax egg to get the cookies you’re looking for. Flax eggs are just ground flaxseed mixed with about three tablespoons of water.

Combine dry ingredients in a bowl. In a separate bowl, beat your margarine, sugars, and vanilla. Add your egg replace to the mixture, beat well after you’ve done so. Gradually add in your dry ingredients to the wet, carefully beating them together. Stir in your chocolate chips, then drop by rounded tablespoons onto an ungreased baking sheet. Bake for eight minutes in an oven that’s been preheated to 375 degrees. Once they’re golden brown, let them rest on the sheet for two minutes, then remove to a wire rack to cool.
